Small Space Solutions – Part 2

Warner Accent Chair by Homelegance

Welcome to the second installment of Small Space Solutions, our series of tips, techniques and ideas that can make smaller rooms feel as large as possible.

The first part in the series, ‘Small Space Solutions‘, covered how to scale back the size of furnishings to make living rooms more spacious.

Another important thing to keep in mind when trying to make a space feel larger is to keep things as bright and light as possible.

Let’s start with the windows. If privacy isn’t a major issue or concern, keep the windows bare. Not only will this let in ample amounts of light, but it’s also a psychological trick where your subconscious will make you take in the view as a part of your interior; immediately making the space feel larger.

If privacy is an issue, get drapes that match the colors of the wall so it won’t break up the flow of light and views into the space. It’s also key to get drapes or window treatments that aren’t heavy or dark. Lighter, wispier materials will add to the bright feel of the room.

As for colors, the general rule of thumb is: the lighter the tones, the bigger the space feels. The effect of this rule is magnified by the number of elements it is applied to.

Aim for lighter colored walls, lighter accent pieces, etc. and the same space you once felt cramped in will oddly feel large enough to be comfortable in.
