Weekend Warrior: Throw Pillows

If you’ve ever looked at accent pillows and thought, “These are ok, but they’re not exactly my style,” you’re not alone. The reason we settle for the accent pillows that we have is either because they accompanied the furniture we purchased or we simply got tired of looking.

Well, if you have a little free time on your hands, consider making the exact throw pillows you desire to have in your home.  Today’s Weekend Warrior will provide the information you’ll need to express your creative side and accent your home with great pillows.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

-desired fabric

-scissors

-coordinating thread

-pre-fabricated pillow form(s)

-sewing machine

-straight pins

Step 1

Consider your needs and plans for the pillow. If you ever intend to remove and wash the pillow cover, it is important that you preshrink any fabric you intend to use. Wash and dry the fabric. Use of machines v. hand washing and hang-drying varies, depending upon the specific fabric being used.

Step 2

Using the size of your pillow form as a guide, measure the fabric to the same dimensions. This will provide an overall snug fit for the fabric around the pillow form. Cut the back piece of fabric with an additional 4 inches (one inch per side) to the dimensions. However, if your chosen fabric is stiff or thicker than most, go ahead and cut the back piece of fabric the same size as the front.

The purpose of the extended length of fabric on one side is for the purpose of folding over to create a simple ‘piping’ effect.

Step 3

Lay the pillow form down onto the top piece of fabric. Place the back piece of the fabric on top of it and pin the fabric to the cushion so you can stick accordingly. Stitch two sides of the pillow cover. Then, adjust the pillow form to the forming case.

Step 4

Stitch around the remaining sides, ensuring that there is a snug fit forming. If you’re using the thicker, or more stiff fabric, closing your pillow cover’s stitching will require a slip-stitch.

Perfecting the creation of accent pillows is a process, but with a little bit of patience and imagination, you’ll be sure to hone your skills.
