How to Paint Any Surface

When it comes to embarking upon a DIY project, two things will always remain true:

  1. Any job is easier with the right tools.
  2. Being informed ahead of time will prevent headaches in the middle of the project.

Not all materials are created equally and treating them as equals when painting will surely lead to headaches. So here are a few painting tips that will hopefully help avoid some of those headaches.

Before painting any surface, proper cleaning and prep work beforehand is essential. How each material is cleaned, however, can vary significantly.

Metal

To paint a metal surface, first scour it with a stiff wire brush in order to remove rust or flaking paint. Wipe the surface with a moist towel and allow it to dry completely. Once dry, you can either use a metal primer or a paint infused with rust inhibitors.

If using a primer, allow it to completely set. The simplest method is to use spray paint. Be sure to shake the can throughout the process to ensure the color remains evenly mixed. Spray several thin coats to avoid running paint.

Bricks

In many homes, the fireplace surround is comprised of bricks. Fashionable at the time the home was constructed, they tend to get grungy over the years and rarely play well with modern decor.

Before picking up a paintbrush, thoroughly clean the bricks with a non-sudsy trisodium phosphate (TSP) and wire brush to break up accumulated grime.

Apply a stain-blocking primer in order to hide soot stains. Before selecting a paint, keep in mind that the higher the gloss, the more soot-resistant it will be.

Safety Tip: Never paint inside of a fireplace.
